The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority, Mrs Sambiat Wiredu has disclosed that three hundred seventy-seven (377) people have died from road accidents in the Ashanti region.
Madam Simbiat Wiredu revealed that 377 people have lost their lives out of 2,286 cases of road traffic clashes while 3,552 people have sustained degree of injuries from January to October 2022 in the region.
She again explained that 4,500 vehicles including motorbikes which have been involved in these clashes shows reduction as compared to last year, 2021.
To her, research and investigations indicate that 60% percent of the accidents were caused by over speeding and wrong overtaken as well as answering phone by drivers calls while driving.
Madam Simbiat Wiredu made these revelations during the world day of remembrance for road crash victims which was supported by Bloomberg Initiative International and KMA at Donkirk Lorry station in the Asante region.
Supt. Mary Afenyi, the Manhyia Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), on behalf of the Regional Commander of MTTD took the opportunity to advise drivers to desist from intake of alcoholic drinks while driving.
Supt. Mary Afenyi however, urged long journey drivers to take enough rest to help combat road accidents during and after the Christmas festivities.
Hon Samuel Pyne, the Kumasi Mayor on his part handed over five speed check machines to the police administration to help check over speeding on roads in the region.
Some drivers who spoke to the media appealed to the relevant stakeholder authorities to do regular road maintenance on the Accra-kumasi highway to help avoid the rate of road accidents.
