Muntaka Mubarak, the interior minister, has vehemently denounced the violent events that spoiled the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North seat and promised that everyone responsible, regardless of party membership, will face prosecution.
During the re-run at 19 polling sites on Friday, July 11, a group of unidentified macho males assaulted the St. Peter’s Polling Center, causing havoc and temporarily stopping voting. Former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson was one among the people attacked.
After the attacks, the area’s security was increased, enabling voting to continue with more police presence.
Speaking to reporters in Accra on Monday, July 14, Muntaka stated that the government is dedicated to holding those responsible for the violence accountable.
“I can assure you that not my party, not any group, will we sit and allow to see the resurgence of vigilantism,” he stated. “I have spoken to the IGP firmly about the happenings in the Ablekuma North. Videos have been forwarded to him, and we have instructed him to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to book.”
Muntaka stressed that criminals will not be protected from prosecution by political relationships or connections.
“We’re not going to condone any actions by individuals within or outside our party going around to do the untoward. I can assure the public that we will ensure that under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, no such group will be allowed to form,” he assured.
The Electoral Commission (EC) organized the rerun in order to settle an outstanding electoral issue from the general elections held on December 7, 2024.
The constituency had been without representation in the 9th Parliament for more than six months as a result of anomalies and the destruction of collation papers.
