Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has threatened to take revenge on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the detention and prosecution of members of the NPP.
“Power has an end, the tables will turn, and we will all have our revenge,” Mustapha said angrily outside the Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, September 9, following the arrest of Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye.
Abronye is scheduled to make a court appearance on Friday, September 12, after being placed under police custody on Tuesday.
His arrest was announced by the Ghana Police Service on Monday, September 8, on the grounds of “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.” He is still in detention after being arrested earlier that day.
Due of Abronye’s high political profile, the case has garnered national attention even though the police have not fully revealed the behavior that resulted in his detention.
Abronye, the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, is renowned for his candid political analysis. He claimed political persecution and threats to his life when he applied for political asylum in eight countries—the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, Germany, and Côte d’Ivoire—shortly before his detention. He charged that he and other opposition members were being targeted by the government through state security services.
