Abuakwa North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Charles Darko Yeboah, has reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to strengthening agricultural development, food security, and environmental protection as he addressed farmers and stakeholders at the 2025 Farmers’ Day celebration held at Saviour Senior High School Park at Osiem in the Eastern Region.
This year’s national theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, and Secure the Future,” set the tone for a ceremony dedicated to honouring farmers for their critical role in sustaining families, communities, and the nation.
Hon. Yeboah praised the resilience and hard work of farmers across the municipality, describing them as the backbone of Ghana’s development and economic stability.
Government Interventions to Boost Agriculture
Speaking on national agricultural reforms, the MCE highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s recently launched ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ project, which aims to distribute 3 million chicks nationwide, with each constituency receiving about 10,000 chicks. The initiative seeks to revive Ghana’s poultry industry, reduce reliance on imported chicken, and create jobs for the youth.
The MCE encouraged all interested residents to register at the Agricultural Department in New Tafo to benefit from the programme.
Additionally, he announced the rollout of the ‘Yeredua Vegetable Development Project’, a strategic intervention targeted at reducing vegetable imports, promoting modernized vegetable farming, and encouraging urban and home gardening.
Local Agricultural Support in Abuakwa North
Hon. Yeboah outlined the Assembly’s ongoing support systems for farmers, including:
- Introduction of improved seed varieties
- Row planting and fertilizer application techniques
- Promotion of organic manure
- Home and farm visits to 820 farmers
- A request for additional fertilizers for future farming seasons
He reaffirmed that agricultural development remains a top priority under the Assembly’s Resetting Agenda, which aims to rebuild systems and accelerate sustainable development.
Eat Ghana, Boosting Local Consumption
The MCE made a strong appeal to residents to prioritize locally grown foods such as rice, maize, vegetables, poultry, cassava, plantain, and fish.
He emphasized that choosing Ghanaian produce supports farmers, strengthens the local economy, and reduces the national import bill.

Firm Stance Against Environmental Degradation
In line with the government’s Tree for Life Initiative, Hon. Yeboah reiterated his commitment to tree planting, water protection, and climate-smart agriculture.
He declared a firm stance against illegal mining (galamsey), stressing that he would not tolerate activities that destroy farmlands and water bodies.
He also addressed concerns about nomadic and Fulani cattle invasions affecting farmland, assuring residents that the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) is working tirelessly to curb the issue permanently. He urged farmers to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
Youth Encouraged to Embrace Agribusiness
Hon. Yeboah encouraged young people to explore opportunities in agriculture and agribusiness instead of indulging in risky behaviors.
As Chairman of the Municipal AIDS Committee, he also urged the public to undergo HIV testing and seek early treatment when necessary.
Celebrating Outstanding Farmers
The event honoured distinguished farmers across the municipality for their hard work and dedication. The MCE congratulated all award winners and extended appreciation to the planning committee, agric directorate, sponsors, and the Osiem community for contributing to a successful celebration.
“God bless our farmers, God bless Abuakwa North, and God bless Ghana,” he concluded.
