The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South who doubles as the deputy trade minister, Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi has said the e-levy will facilitate development in the country if passed.
According to the MP, the country needs to develop but the only way to develop it is to improve and widen the tax net, and internally raise enough revenue, saying western countries have been able to develop their countries through effective taxation.
He explained that other countries in the western world pay taxes to generate a lot of revenue for themselves after which “we as a country go to them for loans from the revenue that they have generated” this according to the MP is very sad and it is an indictment to integrity as Ghanaians and Africans at large.
The deputy trade minister further said a Ghana with a population of about 30 million people, only 2.4 million of the population pay tax to the government; this he said is a bad attitude that does not develop a country.
The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South also accused the minority MP’s of peddling false information concerning the e- levy and deceiving the entire populace that the e- levy is a bad policy hence must be rejected.
The MP said this during a town hall meeting on the e- levy in which he visited Koforidua taxi station and the central market to talk to some drivers and market women on the e- levy.
There were mixed reactions as some market women and drivers expressed their views as to whether the e-levy is good or bad.
