Dr. Isaac Mensah of Forkuo Herbal Clinic, has attentively urged Ghanaians to adopt practices that will preserve their health and prevent them from the spread of typhoid fever since it is caused by unhygienic conditions.
Typhoid fever is a disease caused by salmonella stereotype typhi bacteria, and it is contracted by drinking or eating the bacteria in contaminated food or water.
According to him, one can get typhoid fever if he/she ingests food or beverages prepared by someone who is shedding the bacteria and who does not wash their hands properly.
Speaking with Okley Kofi Solomon on Bryt Fm “Menkwa” show, Dr. Mensah stated that the bacteria that cause typhoid fever is spread through contaminated food, drink, or water and people infected with Salmonella typhi carry the bacteria in their intestinal tract and blood, therefore, maintaining hygienic will aid one from getting the disease.
“Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, fever, headache, severe fatigue, hallucination and among others are some symptoms of typhoid fever, but then some people may also not experience symptoms at all,” he said.
Dr. Mensah highlighted that Typhoid fever is fatal if left untreated because it can lead to multiple health complications including kidney failure, inflammation of heart muscles, Encephalitis, intestinal bleeding, and others, thus one should seek treatment if experiencing the symptoms.
He further advises individuals to maintain hygiene by washing their hands properly with soap each time before the meal, increasing the intake of fluid, drinking filtered water only, avoiding street food, and also getting vaccinated if planning to visit typhoid-prone areas to help to restrict the spread.
