The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Dome-Kwabenya seat has expressed dissatisfaction with Adwoa Safo, who represents the constituency in the House of Representatives, for allowing the position of Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection to elude her control.
This comes after the President decided to rescind her appointment after she neglected to perform her ministerial and legislative responsibilities for months.
Prior to making this choice, the presidency had received requests for the third-term Member of Parliament to be punished for her ongoing absence from work from both inside and outside the NPP.
Theophilus Ansah Larbi, the NPP’s Dome-Kwabenya constituency secretary, expressed surprise at Adwoa Safo’s failure to take up her position in an interview with Citi News regarding the development.
“Adwoa Safo hasn’t been fair to her fans and constituents. She had the opportunity more than other people looking for the same opportunity in the party, and it was given to her because the President trusted and believed in her. But if it has gotten to this point, then it is very disappointing because the constituents were looking forward to some benefits from the Ministry upon her return.”
Adwoa Safo, who is also a member of parliament for Dome Kwabenya, had her appointment cancelled by the president in compliance with article 81 (a) of the constitution, according to a statement from the presidency signed by Eugene Arhin, director of communications.
The decision was made by the President at a time when the Speaker of the House had not authorized her continued absence from the House for more than 15 sitting days.
Earlier on Thursday, Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, postponed making a decision about Adwoa Safo, who had been cited for absenteeism.
The issue was whether or not Adwoa Safo would have obeyed the Privileges Committee’s summons after it took into account her absence and the Dome Kwabenya seat would have been declared empty.
Mr. Bagbin stated that he required more time to submit a formal decision following a discussion on the report by the Privileges Committee.
Until a permanent Minister for the Gender Ministry is selected by the President, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, will continue to serve in that capacity.
