Ghana have suffered a major blow ahead of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar as Gideon Mensah is ruled out due to injury.
The Auxerre defender was part of the 25 players invited for the crucial qualifier scheduled for Sunday, June 18, 2023.
Upon assessment by the medical team over a knee injury he picked during the season after his arrival to camp on Monday, he has been excused from the game.
“Gideon picked up a knee injury during the season but his club managed him conservatively until the end of the season. Upon assessment in camp on Monday, we decided to excuse him from this game in order not to aggravate the injury” Team medical head, Dr. Prince Pambo told ghanafa.org.
“We expect him to have enough rest during the break to be able to recover on time for next season” Dr. Pambo added.
Ghana will travel to face Madagascar on Sunday, June 18, 2023 in the penultimate AFCON qualifiers.
Ghana currently sit top of the table with 8 points and a win at away could secure them qualification to the AFCON tournament to be staged in Ivory Coast next year.
Gideon Mensah who made his Ghana debut against South Africa in 2019 has featured in one Africa Cup of Nations tournament and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Meanwhile, Ghana will continue with the preparations at the Accra Sports stadium on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.
