The District Chief Executive for Kwahu Afram Plains South George Ofori has said, feasibility study on the construction of a bridge over 3Km Afram River in Kwahu Afram Plains has been completed and approved by Cabinet awaiting Parliamentary approval for commencement of work.
Afram Plains is a food basket of the country. It consists of two Districts—Afram Plains South and Afram Plains North with ‘Tease’ and Donkokrom as the district capitals respectively.
These districts cover a total of 5,436 square kilometers of the landmass. Agriculture is the mainstay of the people.
In 2016, the NPP promised to construct a bridge over the Afram River if it wins the election this was reiterated in 2018 during a visit by President Akufo Addo to the area.
With less than 57 days to the December 7 election, this promise has not been fulfilled.
The Chief of Pitiku Traditional Area in Afram Plains South Nana Adu Parko II, though acknowledges that government interventions such as Planting for Food and Jobs have impacted positively on agriculture in the area, challenges in transportation still hinder agriculture, therefore, called on the government to fulfill a promise to construct a bridge over the Afram River to open up the local economy.
He said,” government should just cut the sod for the project to assure the people of the Political commitment of the Government”. He said the bridge is very critical to opening up the local economy.
The Chief also appealed to the government to rehabilitate the deplorable road from Enkye to Donkorkrom to aid transportation of foodstuff adding that due to the bad nature of the road farmers are not getting buyers.
