There is tension at Gyaneboafo, a farming community in Afram Plains South District following the killing of a farmer by a Fulani herdsman.
The deceased was shot in the abdomen when he and his two brothers attempted to arrest the suspect fleeing after his cattle destroyed their harvested tubers of yam.
The deceased, a Dagomba, from the Nothern Region had visited his brother-owner of the farm, to attend his marriage ceremony which happened last week.
His body has been retrieved by the Police for preservation and autopsy at the Presbyterian Hospital in Donkorkrom
Assembly Member for Bonkro Electoral Area under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, Jordan Yunbow Michael confirmed the incident to Mybrytfmonline.com.
According to the Assembly Member, the District Police Commander has led a team of investigators to the community making effort to arrest the suspect now at large, hence asked the angry farmers planning to retaliate to remain calm.
“We can also react but because of peace. If we should do something today Ghanaians will say there is law but where was this same law when we asked for protection to drive this person away. Now our brother jas been shot dead if we say we are going to retaliated they will tell you there is law.it is only in Ghana that this thing can happen not even Togo can this thing happen”.The furious Assembly Member stated.
There has been renewed tension between farmers and herders in Communities such us Gyaneboafo
Aframsu, Kwame Boye, Makofi Charity, Bonkro, Tease among others over the destruction of farms and pollution of water bodies.
A joint team of Military and National Security was recently dispatched to some of the troubled areas for a two-day operation which led to the killing of dozens of cattle. Some Fulani herdsmen reportedly sustained gunshot injuries in the process.
Alhaji Sandari Adamu who is the leader of Fulani’s residing in Afram Plains in an interview with mybrytfmonline.com accused the District Chief Executive, Hon. George Ofori for the unresolved feud.
“Fulani’s in the Afram Plains has been registered and issued a card with an identification number on it; they are being tasked for development in the district by the assembly which demands annual renewal”. Alhaji Sandari finally said, “the assembly should have notified or caution them of breaking the laid down rules before embarking on this operation which has now rendered them jobless”.
Finally, Idrisa Sambo who is a chief of Fulani’s at Donkorkrom in the Kwahu Afram Plains North also added that his 40 cows confined in a ranch was shot dead by the military in the ranch and added that he is now living in fear because of the way and manner the military is carrying out the operation whereby all Fulani was being described as criminal and the police are not ready to protect them.
