Africa must not let the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine go to waste, New Patriotic Party stalwart Gabby Otchere-Darko has advised.
He has charged African leaders to think outside the box and put down pragmatic policies to produce more food to feed the growing population no matter the issues at hand.
Ghana and other African countries have attributed skyrocketing prices of food items to the Russia-Ukraine war and other factors such as the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
However, making reference to Mo Dewji, a Tanzanian billionaire businessman and former politician, Mr Otchere-Darko hinted that the Ugandan politician is producing grains in Africa and floating it on the western stock market(s) to raise funds for it in this era of economic crises.
Mohammed “Mo” Gulamabbas Dewji is a Tanzanian billionaire businessman and former politician. He is the owner of MeTL Group, a Tanzanian conglomerate founded by his father in the 1970s. Dewji served as a Member of the Tanzanian Parliament for Chama Cha Mapinduzi from 2005 to 2015 for his home town of Singida.
Comments by the politician have raised a lot of debate as to the analogy of the government blaming the country’s economic woes on the two above-mentioned reasons.
Some are of the view Gabby’s comment must instead be channelled to President Akufo-Addo instead of shared on social media, as it exposes the incompetence of the Government.
His post below:
“This is how an African entrepreneur responds to the food crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. He has set up an entity to produce grains in Africa and floating it on the western stock market(s) to raise funds for it. Mo is a former MP (served for 10yrs) and went back to run a family business set up by his dad. Africa must not let the crisis or Covid and War in Ukraine go to waste”.
