As of 27th December 2020, the number of COVID-19 related deaths recorded in Africa stands at 62,787.
Out of the number, South Africa alone has recorded 26,735 deaths, followed by Egypt which also has 7,352 COVID deaths, Morocco – 7,240, Tunisia – 4,426, and Algeria – 2,722.
As of 27th December, Seychelles had not recorded any COVID-related death while Western Sahara and Eritrea have recorded one each death.
Confirmed cases from February to 27th December stand at 2,673,715 and Active cases are 376,787.
A total of 2,234,141 persons who contracted the virus in Africa have recovered and been discharged so far.
The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have spread to Africa on 14 February 2020, with the first confirmed case announced in Egypt.
The first confirmed case in sub-Saharan Africa was announced in Nigeria at the end of February.
Within three months, the virus had spread throughout the continent, like Lesotho, the last African sovereign state to have remained free of the virus, reported a case on 13 May.
