Dr Owusu Afriye Akoto, the Minister of Food and Agriculture has revealed that the Agriculture fair was introduced to this year’s national Farmers Awards offers opportunities to all stakeholders in the agriculture sector to showcase their products and services and has generated business among themselves and the general public.
Speaking at the 38th edition of the national Farmers’ day celebration at Koforidua, the minister added that farmers all over the country have proven to the office of the district chief executives for planting over 28 billion seedlings of six selected crops under the planting for export and rural development.
The minister stated all the programs are policies by which the government seeks to diversify the tree crops sector to add to the dominant traditional cocoa sub-sector as two major examples of a strategic role by farmers in partnering government transformation agenda for Ghana.
He affirmed the ministry has embarked on a food visit to ten regions this year in the country adding that the visit has provided the ministry with direct information to fully assess the performance of the ground and priorities for policy directions.
On his assessment of the Regional visitation, he said the ongoing harvest will be good this year and that the food security situation will remain strong.
He indicated farmers and fishers have built food security by responding to the incentive provided by the government and the flagship, planting for food and jobs, adding that they have provided nourishment, employment, and supplying raw materials for industries.
“The Akufo-Addo led-administration has provided Ghc2.5 billion to improve seeds and fertilizers in the food crops sector from 2017 to 2021 adding farmers were able to apply it to produce foodstuffs during that period” he added.
