Ghana trainer Charles Akonnor will play his first competitive game as coach of the Black Stars against the Nile Crocodiles of Sudan in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers later today, Thursday, November 12 at the Cape Coast Stadium.
The former national captain was handed the Black Stars role in January 2020 and tasked to put together a side capable of delivering Ghana’s first AFCON title since 1982.
Before his appointment, he served briefly as an assistant to James Akwasi Appiah, the man he succeeded in the role.
Following his appointment, Akonnor was set to take charge of his first competitive game in March against Sudan until the Coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation and eventual postponement of the fixture.
Despite making his debut as coach in the two international friendly matches against Mali and Qatar last month, he is set to play his first competitive match.
He lost 3-0 to Mali last month (which was his debut game) but made amends days later when he masterminded a massive 5-1 victory against Qatar.
The game is scheduled to kick off at 4:00 pm GMT.
