Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the member of parliament for North Tongu is enraged by recent remarks made by sanitation minister, Freda Prempeh that inhabitants of Mepe refused to leave despite repeated warnings from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Volta River Authority (VRA).
Madam Prempeh criticized locals in the Lower Volta area during a meeting hosted by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in Accra for not relocating to higher ground as instructed before the spillage began.
Prior to the Akosombo Dam leak, the minister said that inhabitants in the impacted regions had received considerable education; yet, this information was disregarded, which has led to the disastrous situation we are currently in.
In response to the remark, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed his outrage and demanded that the impacted individuals be handled with dignity.
“We are distressed, we are depressed, and we are devastated, and they should stop these things because it is getting on our nerves. We have had enough of their blatant lies. She should tell us when, and she should give us dates when they came here. I mean, does she know what she is talking about? Where did they say the people should move to and they refused? The people were here more than 200 years before the dam was constructed.”
He made the remarks in an interview on Class FM.
