The Ukrainian government arranged a two-day Peace Summit in Switzerland, which was attended by around 100 people from all over the world. Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, Ghana’s president, is among those in attendance.
President Akufo-Addo said during the conference that the war, which started in February 2022, has increased food prices globally, which has had an impact on the African market.
Speaking at the Summit on Sunday, Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, said that Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, will not stop the conflict, so something needs to be done to break the impasse between his country and Russia.
President Zelensky said that winning the war required more help from the West.
In his speech to the summit attendees on Sunday, June 16, 2024, President Akufo-Addo stressed that the UN Charter and international law serve as the foundation for the mission to seek a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine. He also mentioned how the Russian/Ukrainian War has had a significant impact on the African continent.
He said, “We are facing additional strains on vulnerable economies and struggling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The blockade of the Black Sea has led to severe shortages and skyrocketing food prices, precipitating a food security crisis across Africa.”
“This has resulted in a surge in the cost of living and a looming threat of hunger and malnutrition over the continent’s most vulnerable populations. The repercussions of the war extend far beyond Ukraine, threatening global stability and economic security.”
In addition, by reiterating the commitment to the rule of law, respect for national sovereignty, and protection of human rights, President Akufo-Addo stated that open, honest, and inclusive dialogue is the foundation of sustainable peace. The Summit offered a chance to heal divisions and establish the framework for a global peace that will last a lifetime.
He said, “The Ukraine Peace Formula, which includes the cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of foreign troops, and restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, stands as a critical framework for achieving lasting peace.”
