The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has blamed the nation’s excessive reliance on foreign aid for President Akufo-Addo’s purported resistance to signing the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.
In a meeting with diplomats, President Akufo-Addo declared he would hold off on making a decision until after the Supreme Court’s decision on the law.
Prior to this, the Finance Ministry cautioned President Akufo-Addo against supporting the contentious law due to possible negative effects on foreign financial support.
The measure has generated a lot of discussion since it intends to penalize people who identify as LGBTQ+ and those who support them.
In order to stop foreign funders from controlling Ghana, Mahama spoke to the clergy in Accra as part of his Building Ghana Tour and laid forth intentions to create an independent economy.
“Indications we are getting is that he [Akufo-Addo] says he won’t sign it because somebody has filed a suit with the Supreme Court so he has become entangled with some legal issues.
“This is just the reason for being self-reliant. If you are not self-reliant that is when people can dictate to you. If we were self-reliant nobody would come ask us to do this or do that and so one of the key economic policies we must pursue is one of self-reliance.”
