Joyce Bawah Mogtari, presidential advisor and adviser to President John Dramani Mahama, says she concurs with the rising public opinion that former President Nana Akufo-Addo ought to have resigned following his first term in office.
Speaking on Friday, December 19, on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Ms. Bawah stated that while President Akufo-Addo entered office with a great deal of goodwill, his administration quickly lost focus by spending years disparaging the work of his predecessor.
“I do believe, as many have actually come to conclude, that maybe after his first time he really should have left office,” she said.
“I remember he spent a lot of the first few years literally attacking everything that his predecessor had done or hadn’t done,” she added.
She gave the example of the Meridian Port Services (MPS) project at Tema Port, which was harshly criticized by the Akufo-Addo administration but has subsequently shown its worth.
“That investment didn’t even make sense to them. There were a lot of criticisms of that project. But today, it is the one project that I believe actually symbolises what a leader can achieve when they set their mind to it.”
According to Ms. Bawah, leadership must be based on accountability and responsibility, which she feels was compromised during the previous government.
She then turned to former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, criticizing what she saw as his unwillingness to accept accountability for choices taken while he was in office, especially with regard to Ghana’s financial predicament.
“There is a certain latitude that you ought not to give your appointees. There is a certain level of responsibility that they must also feel,” she said.
