Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on all flagbearer aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to place unity above individual ambitions as the party prepares for its January 31 election.
According to him, unity is not a matter of choice but a critical requirement for securing victory. He stressed that internal cohesion remains the party’s strongest asset.
Speaking at the Peace Pact signing ceremony involving the five NPP flagbearer aspirants on Thursday, January 22, 2026, Akufo-Addo noted that the NPP’s philosophy continues to resonate with the Ghanaian electorate. “The NPP is bigger than any individual. Unity is not optional; it is a strategic necessity for victory,” he said, adding that the party’s ideology remains deeply appealing to the majority of Ghanaians.
Also addressing the gathering, former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye, appealed for fairness and integrity in the flagbearer selection process. He urged aspirants to conduct themselves in line with the party’s core values and traditions.
Professor Oquaye underscored the importance of unity, fairness, and mutual respect, reminding aspirants that past incidents of unfair practices, bias, and excessive partisanship had weakened party cohesion. He described the signing of the peace pact as a crucial step toward safeguarding unity within the NPP.
“Please do something honourable for the New Patriotic Party and our tradition,” he appealed.
“In saying this, I am mindful that unfair practices, partiality, and base partisanship happened in our party, which have destroyed or shaken our unity”, he added.
The five contenders in the race include Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central; Dr Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Agriculture; Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President; Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education; and Mr Kwabena Agyepong, former Presidential Press Secretary and General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
