Activities of illegal mining, popularly known as ‘galamsey’ seems to be a serious challenge in Ghana as President Akufo-Addo has admitted it’s effects in Parliament.
According to the President, several arguments rose over the years concerning the issue, it seems difficult to take a stand on either to ban or allow the activities of illegal miners.
The President, even though failing to be specific on government’s stand on their activities as of now, he stressed that the activities of illegal mining has had negative effect on the country’s forests, water bodies as well as lands.
President Akufo-Addo insisted that there is the need to take bold and hard decisions to ensure our forest bodies and lands are well protected.
Ghana has over the years has to fight with the menace of illegal mining with various successive governments failing to deal with the issue holistically.
