Members of Parliament to embarked on a field visit to some rice farms near Akuse. This offered lawmakers a firsthand glimpse into the methane emissions associated with rice cultivation.
Prior to this, MPs attended a workshop focused on methane reduction strategies in agriculture, with experts highlighting rice paddies as a significant source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
The visit aimed to translate classroom lessons into practical understanding by observing farm practices and discussing mitigation options in real farm settings.
Experts and local technicians explained how anaerobic conditions in flooded paddies can generate methane emissions, especially during mid-growth stages when water levels are maintained to support plant health.
Several MPs highlighted the importance of aligning national climate goals with farmers’ livelihoods, stressing the need for training, extension services, and access to affordable inputs.
Parliament plans to integrate findings into a broader policy framework that supports sustainable agriculture, considers subsidies or financing for low-emission technologies, and expands extension programs to rural areas
“What we saw today reinforces the need for practical, farmer-centered solutions that protect livelihoods while protecting the climate.
