Tensions are rising in the ongoing Akwatia by-election as the National Democratic Congress has accused the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, of fueling chaos with alleged vigilante groups.
Speaking to journalists in Akwatia, the NDC Chairman for New Juaben South, Salasie Amuzu, alleged that Mr. Afenyo-Markin stormed the constituency with what he described as “macho men” who attacked NDC supporters and even removed the party’s posters.
“It is quite unfortunate that a Honourable Member like Afenyo-Markin is bringing his thugs to attack the good people of Akwatia. We have been very peaceful here since morning until he came in. I’m calling on the IGP and National Security to call him to order before things escalate,” Amuzu said.
The NDC official insisted that the party has raised the matter with the Police and National Security, urging swift intervention to avert possible clashes.
He warned that if the situation is not brought under control, the peace of the by-election could be compromised.
Meanwhile, police personnel are maintaining a strong presence at various polling stations in Akwatia to ensure calm.
