Ahead of the Akwatia by-election, the National Communications Director of the Opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has disclosed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has planned to deploy military men to their strongholds in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region.
According to the National Communications Director, the decision by the NDC is to intimidate and terrorize NPP electorates with a high security presence in Akwatia.
He emphasized that the planned deployment of the military to NPP strongholds aims at creating fear and preventing electorates from voting for the NPP.
Speaking to Koforidua-based Bryt FM, Richard Ahiagbah stated categorically that the NPP will be vigilant during the electoral process in the Akwatia Constituency. He added that they will not give their attention to military men during the Akwatia by-election.
“The NDC planned to misunderstand during the counting process, but they will never be successful in their plans, and we are ready to face them. We are going to vote peacefully in Akwatia,’’ Richard Ahiagbah told Nhyiraba Solomon Nartey during the weekend news bulletin.
“NPP doesn’t want military presence at Akwatia. Military men who will storm Akwatia are not legitimate military personnel but NDC military men,” Richard Ahiagbah warned.
Richard Ahiagbah called eligible voters to massively vote for the NPP candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, in the Akwatia byelection.
Meanwhile, at a press conference in Akwatia last Friday, the Director-General of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Dr. Vance Baba Gariba, said the Police Administration had contacted the Electoral Commission (EC) to provide accreditation for monitors and media personnel who would be covering the by-election.
COP Gariba warned that anybody who did not possess accreditation should not come to any polling station or collation center, as they would not be spared when caught.
He said that the 5,500 police personnel were deployed to maintain peace during and after the election.
