Imagine eating for seven (7) years yet unable to pass stool. That is the condition of Yaw Anane, a 7-year-old boy in Papa Agyei Village near Akyem Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North Municipality in the Eastern region diagnosed with Hirschsprung disease with abdominal distension.
As Christ was born into the world to save humanity, the 7-year-old boy also needs support to be saved this Christmas as a reciprocating gesture of Jesus’ love.
The 7-year-old boy Yaw Anane lives in Papa Agyei Village with his single mother, Janet Anane.
Anane was born with a rare condition of being unable to ease himself as the faeces stuck in his bowel but due to financial challenges, the single mother of Yaw Anane failed to seek early advance medical treatment deteriorating his condition.
Anane ‘s belly continues to swell. He reportedly suffers convulsions intermittently.
His condition deteriorated in recent times and was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital but later referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital for further medical attention.
On December 11, 2022, he was diagnosed with Hirschsprung disease with abdominal distension and difficulty in passing stool.
Hirschsprung disease is a rare congenital condition where the large intestine (rectal area) lacks a kind of nerve cell called ganglion cells.
It is a condition that causes poo to become stuck in the bowels.
It mainly affects babies and young children. Normally, the bowel continuously squeezes and relaxes to push poo along, a process controlled by your nervous system.
Hirschsprung disease occurs in 1 of 5000 live births and accounts for 20% of neonatal bowel obstructions.
Children who have Hirschsprung’s disease are prone to a serious intestinal infection called enterocolitis which can be life-threatening.
Medical Doctors at the Eastern regional hospital say Yaw Anane’s condition is critical and hence referred him to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Sadly, his mother Janet Anane could not even afford an ambulance fee to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital hence took the boy back to Papa Agyei Village perhaps waiting for a miracle to happen.
The condition of Yaw Anane has affected his education.
The KG1 pupil had to join his colleagues in the village to walk about 14 km daily to Kukurantumi Methodist Basic school however due to his condition he is sitting at home whilst his mates are learning.
Yaw Anane is calling on philanthropists and corporate institutions to support him get medical treatment.
