The Member of Parliament for Ketu South in the Volta Region, Abla – Dzifa Gomashie has appealed to the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development as matter of urgency to open fishing season for Ghanaians.
According to her, most people in her Constituency are finding it difficult to survive since the fishing season was closed and called on Government to find another alternative for the affected persons.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in collaboration with the Fisheries Commission has announced the 2021 Closed Season starting from July 1 to August 31.
The two entities implementing the closed season together announced that Artisanal and Inshorefleets would observe theirs from July 1st to 31st, while that of the Industrial fleets would be observed from July 1 until August 31st, 2021.
In an interview with Accra-based Citi TV, Honourable Abla – Dzifa Gomashie also called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to consider opening the borders which were closed in 2020 when the pandemic COVID-19 entered Ghana.
She said “I have been saying that His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo it is because of Ghanaians divine mercy that filed him to be the chair of ECOWAS and this is where I am encouraging him to use that opportunity to negotiate with his colleague’s heads of state and find a solution as he finds for air travel and opens the borders by going through some kind of protocol that will not spread the virus.
Air borders were reopened to international travel from September 1, 2020, but sea and land borders remain closed since 21st March 2020.
