Some angry residents of Donkorkrom in Kwahu Afram Plains North District in the Eastern region on Thursday stormed the Donkorkrom Divisional Police Command over allegations of molestation and abuse by the Anti -Armed Robbery squad deployed by the acting Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akufo Dampare.
A local reporter Joshua Tetteh told Mybrytfmonline.com that the angry residents were led by Kwahu Afram Plains North constituency treasurer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr. Seth Kwabena Atuobi who alleged that “he was mobbed by some armed police officers deployed to the Ekye, Donkokrom, Agordeke road to protect citizens and also curbing the recent armed robbery cases. The constituency treasurer said he was assaulted and left with injuries which he was admitted at Donkokrom Presbyterian hospital”.
He said “according to some okada riders in the district capital whose colleague was also assaulted by the police officers yesterday alleged that recently the police officers deployed into the community are indiscriminately assaulting them”
The Donkokrom Divisional Commander Felix Apedo said he will investigate the claims however asked the residents to remain calm rather than corporate with the police.
The Eastern Region has recorded high cases of highway robberies this year leading to fatalities, injuries and lost monies, and personal effects.
As a result, the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has deployed 126 troops of the Anti-Armed Robbery Squad (AARS) to the Eastern Region to clamp down on rampant robbery activities.
The AARS special force is to augment the capacity and capabilities of the Eastern Regional police command to deal with the menace.
The contingent is led by Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohonu and assisted by the Director-General of Operations, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr. Mohammed Fuseini Suraji.
