Fix the Country protestors have called on Ghana’s president, H.E John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency to aid in the fight against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey in the country.
The determined group of protesters gathered at Accra Mall and began a symbolic march toward Jubilee House, the seat of government. Their mission was to deliver a petition directly to President John Mahama, demanding immediate and decisive action against illegal mining (galamsey).
This protest took place on Monday, 22nd September. Their petition highlights urgent demands of the state of emergency and to stop galamsey at all costs. Protesters say the time for speeches is over; what’s needed now is bold leadership and genuine accountability. They believe he is very capable of meeting their demands.
One of the demonstrators expressed firm belief in His Excellency’s ability to lead Ghana out of the galamsey crisis. He stated that the President has both the capacity and the moral obligation to fulfill his promise to the people to end illegal mining and pave the way for a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous Ghana.
‘’We are pleading on you to declare a state of emergency. that’s the only thing we want from you, and we shall uphold and defend your legacy forever. We will never allow them to say you are incompetent anymore. You’re competent, you can do it,’’ he said.
