Accra, February 3, 2025 – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the unilateral suspension of three of its Members of Parliament by the Speaker, describing the action as “selective and autocratic.”
In a statement issued on Monday, the party expressed its displeasure over the Speaker’s decision on Friday, January 31, 2025, to suspend the MPs, calling it a dangerous move aimed at weakening the Minority’s ability to hold the government accountable.
“The Party sees this selective and autocratic posture of the Speaker as very dangerous, with all these actions packaged to cow the Minority into submission, consequently weakening its potential to hold the government accountable,” the statement read.
The NPP assured its Members of Parliament of its unwavering support and pledged full backing for the Minority Caucus’ planned press conference on February 3, 2025, and any subsequent briefings on the matter.
The party further rejected the Speaker’s decision, arguing that it violates the Constitution and disregards principles of natural justice.
Reaffirming its stance, the NPP stated that it stands firmly with its 88 MPs in their efforts to resist any form of repression and unfairness in parliamentary proceedings and national governance.
The statement was signed by Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the NPP.
