A driver in charge of the Yilo Krobo Ambulance service vehicle has been shot by highway robbers while rushing a pregnant woman in preterm labor to Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua.
The incident occurred on Somanya to Adukrom road around 1:00 am Thursday, January 4, 2021.
The Ambulance driver in charge of the Ambulance vehicle with registration Number GV 644-20 went to pick the woman in preterm labor (31 weeks) from Akuse government Hospital to Eastern Regional Hospital since Akuse Hospital has no neonatal intensive care unit(NICU).
However, met the armed robbers on the road while speeding hence failed to stop.
The armed robbers got infuriated and opened fire on the Ambulance shooting the driver in the head.
“The ambulance was en route from Akuse Government Hospital in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the early hours of Thursday 4th February 2021 with a Mother in Labour who is having complications to the Regional hospital at Koforidua was attacked and Rob at Adukrom. The driver of the National Ambulance was shot in the head. Both the Mother in Labour and the Driver were rushed to Tetteh-Quarshie Memory Hospital after the sad incident but because of the critical state of the driver’s injury, he was further referred to Koler-Bu Teaching Hospital for specialist care. Police have commenced with an investigation into the sad incident” Emmanuel Tetteh a local Journalist told mybrytfmonline.com.
The acting Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sergeant Francis Gomado confirmed the incident when contacted.
No arrest has been made yet.
The robbery attack is happening three days after similar shootings of three police officers – Sergeant Moses Tetteh Nartey, Corporal Christian Totimeh, and Detective Ibrahim Apaka by highway robbers on Akyem Pramkese to Akyem Techiman road in Kwaebibirem District of the Eastern Region.
Sergeant Moses Tetteh Nartey died from two gunshot wounds on his chest and one on his head while Corporal Christian Totimeh also sustained a gunshot wound on his left rib now responding to treatment.
