The Ghana Amputee Team is always treated with disdain. I speak to these boys and they always feel neglected as humans.
They should’ve been a team to receive special treatment. Not just because they are the best on the continent but because of who they are.
It is always the reverse. They get to travel mostly by appealing for funds. They’ll get jerseys only through benevolence and not merit.
The last time they won the AFCON, they were grounded for weeks in Tanzania with their trophy because they had no return tickets.
It took Twitter hashtags and media backlash to get government to fly them back.
They won the Africa Paralympic Football last year and till date, not a pesewa has been paid them despite government approving their budget for participation.
They’ve gone further to beat well-funded teams like Egypt, Algeria, Morocco etc to win the Amputee AFCON last week despite receiving no bonus or per diem.
I always have these guys in mind because ordinarily, they’d have been on the streets begging- but for the opportunities created by right-thinking nations to explore their talents.
It is not surprising that countries who have plans for minority groups such as Para athletes tend to do well in all areas of life, and then there is us, care-less folks.
I beg all of us, let’s come together to ensure that the se boys get paid what is due them to enable them prepare for the World Cup.
If the state feels they’re less important, disband their sport and dissolve the teams with immediate effect.
We cannot leave them wallowing in pain and we cannot say we don’t have money because we know what time it is.
PAY THEM please!
