The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made another insensitive joke that has caused widespread outrage amongst Ghanaians. This time it was about paying churches the value they bring to society. While he may claim it was just a joke, this is not the first time he has caused distress with his ill-conceived statementsIn the past, the Vice President has jokes that have been widely regarded as sexist, offensive, or insensitive. He once made a comment about his wife being the “only woman he’s allowed to hug,” which was seen as objectifying and misogynistic. His remarks about paying churches for their services are not the first time he has made a joke at the expense of religion either. He misquoted the Bible could that also be a joke?
It is unacceptable that someone in such a position of power and influence would make such remarks. As a leader, one must exercise caution and take their words seriously.
Even if it was just a joke, it is not one that can be taken lightly. Ghana is a deeply religious country, and many people look up to religious leaders for guidance and support. Suggesting that they should receive payment for their services is not only inappropriate; it could also stir up religious tensions and misunderstandings.
It is also worth mentioning that Ghana is facing several challenges that require serious attention, from economic hardship to healthcare and security concerns. In this context, humor may not be the best mode of expression for a leader, especially when it distracts from the gravity of these issues.
Leaders should be held accountable for their actions and words, and the Vice President is no exception. When statements are made that could potentially cause harm or offense, they must be called out for what they are. As Ghanaians, we deserve leaders who speak thoughtfully and carefully, who think before they speak, and who prioritize the well-being of the nation above all else.
The comments made by the Vice President, including his recent joke about paying churches for their services, are a reflection of his lack of judgment and sensitivity.
It is time he takes his position seriously and learns to measure his words carefully. Ghana deserves better leadership, one that is respectful and responsive to the people’s needs like John Mahama .#building the Ghana we want together.
