A total of 3,940 Women in the West Akyem Municipality of the Eastern Region accepted family planning services in 2019.
Out of the number, 2,940 were new acceptors and 924 Continues acceptors, according to a Community Health Nurse, Madam Priscilla Yeboah.
She said this during the Public Sensitization program on family planning in Asamankese.
Family Planning is the practice of controlling the number of children one has and the intervals between their births, particularly using contraception or voluntary sterilization.
Madam Priscilla Yeboah emphasized on the benefits of Family planning and said it Improve maternal health and child survival, Reducing the number of abortions overall, especially unsafe abortion,
Preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS, Empowering women,
Promoting social and economic development and security and Protecting the environment.
She called on women to avoid self-medication in family planning and seek health officials’ advice before they use some medicines from drug stores.
In Ghana, the prevalence of modern contraceptive use among married/in union women is 22%; that of unmet need among married/in union women is 30% and the demand for modern contraceptive satisfaction is 39%.
With just 2 years to 2020, there is the need to increase efforts to satisfy women’s need for contraception.
