Non-communicable diseases are on the rise in the Ashanti region, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
The Regional Health Director, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang has indicated that hypertension and diabetes lead in cases reported at health facilities within the region, a situation he describes as worrying.
He stressed that hypertension alone is made up of 10% while diabetes also forms 3% of total cases reported daily in the region.
Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang has, however, attributed the sharp rise in such cases to the poor eating habits of Ghanaians as well as lack of physical exercise and eating late at night prior to sleeping time.
He has, therefore, urged the public to be circumspect in whatever they eat nor drink and also advised against late in the night since the food cannot digest before going to sleep.
“I will advise those with such diseases to observe the protocols laid down to fight the COVID-19 pandemic as their immune system is vulnerable to infections, therefore the need to adhere to social distancing. This is because they are more likely to get infected as compared to those with communicable diseases.
