The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers and fatally shot another in a separate robbery-related operation within the region.
The first incident occurred on July 9, when police received a distress call about an armed robbery in progress along the Ankaako–Asuoso–Fenase road in the Amansie South District. According to reports, four armed men had blocked the road and were robbing commuters.
A police patrol team swiftly responded and apprehended all four suspects, who were attempting to flee on motorbikes. The arrested individuals have been identified as Rahman Alhassan, 27; Nurudeen Fatawu, 25; Naafewu Masahudu, 22; and Yaw Saaka, 42.
Items recovered from the suspects include a pump-action shotgun, 20 rounds of AAA ammunition, a sword, and a collection of talismans.
In a separate intelligence-led operation in Abedwum, within the Obuasi Municipality, police engaged another group of armed robbers. According to the police, the suspects opened fire upon sighting officers and fled into a nearby bush. Police returned fire, resulting in the death of one suspect.
A search of the deceased’s backpack revealed 14 rounds of ammunition and other undisclosed items. The remaining suspects managed to escape and are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds.
Police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fugitives and maintain heightened security across the region.
