Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Energy and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, has given the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his support in his bid to head the New Patriotic Party as its presidential candidate in 2024.
The minister announced this support and said that he will have the full backing of Manhyia South in his bid for the open seat, beginning with the upcoming NPP special electoral college elections.
The number of contenders for the position of presidential candidate has beyond the minimum of five candidates allowed by the party constitution, necessitating the extraordinary election.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said the vice president’s sterling qualities, experience, deep sense of loyalty, and sacrifices for the party make him the party’s best foot going into the 2024 elections while speaking at a meeting of NPP delegates of the constituency where Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia made his case for the delegates to vote for him.
According to the energy minister, Dr. Bawumia has the necessary character to bring together all facets of Ghanaian society, including those from all religious backgrounds, making it impossible for the party to secure a third term electoral victory—commonly referred to in NPP parlance as “Breaking the 8.”
“The vice president has served well as vice president, defending the programs and policies of our government and remains the only existential threat to the electoral fortunes of John Mahama and the NDC, of all the candidates vying for the flagbearership slot,” he said.
The vice president is his father, hence Dr. Bawumia cannot have Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s support in the key election since his grandpa, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, openly acknowledged that Dr. Bawumia is his son.
For the next 11 days, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be in the Ashanti Region, the NPP’s heartland, where he will try to persuade delegates in the 47 constituencies to elect him as the party’s flagbearer over the other 9 contenders.
