The former trade minister Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chair Johnson Asiedu Nketia, may eventually be beneficial for the country.
Mr. Nketia claimed during an appearance with JoyNews’ PM Express that events like Mr. Kyerematen’s departure would be advantageous for Ghana’s democracy.
He asserts that because Ghanaians are becoming aware of certain patriotic individuals who do not pledge their allegiance to their party but to the state, developments like this assist in reducing tensions that may otherwise threaten to sabotage the democratic processes in the nation.
“In a democracy, you cannot completely block the wrong people from assuming leadership roles. So even though political parties may try their best to prevent bad people from slipping through, once in a while, you can get the wrong person to become a leader.”
“And when this wrong person is in power, and he is messing up, then patriots, both ones within the leader’s party and ones outside the party who are interested in protecting democracy, come together and choose the interest of the state,” he explained.
On Monday, September 25, Mr. Alan Kyerematen resigned from NPP with immediate effect. He then declared that he will run as an independent in the following general election.
His departure has triggered discussions throughout the country’s political spectrum. Others see it as a chance for the country to reaffirm its commitment to democratic norms and principles, while some see it as a sign of internal strife within the party.
Nevertheless, Mr. Nketia is certain that this development would enable the opposition to “get rid of the dictator” and preserve Ghana’s democracy.
