Accra, June 27, 2025 — Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for the immediate removal of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) leadership, citing gross incompetence and a loss of public confidence in the institution.
Speaking on PM Express with Evans Mensah on JoyNews on Thursday, June 26, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah stated that the EC, under its current leadership, has failed to effectively discharge its constitutional mandate, putting the integrity of the country’s electoral processes at risk.
“There is overwhelming evidence that this Electoral Commission is not fit for purpose,” he said. “If any serious country wants to maintain this type of Electoral Commission, then I don’t know what that country stands for.”
He called for the dismissal of the EC Chairperson and her two deputies, arguing that their continued tenure has compromised the credibility of the Commission and undermined public trust in Ghana’s democratic systems.
“They have mismanaged the Commission so badly. All three of them must go,” he insisted.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah further referenced constitutional provisions that he says allow for the removal of Electoral Commission officials through legal and transparent means. He drew parallels with the procedures used for removing high-ranking public officials such as the President and Supreme Court judges.
“The Constitution provides a path for their removal—just as it does for Supreme Court judges and the President,” he said. “There is no appointee or state official who cannot be held accountable or removed under this Constitution.”
The Electoral Commission has not yet issued a response to the NDC Chairman’s remarks.
