The new Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, has issued a strong warning against attacks on police stations and personnel in the region, stressing that the Police Service exists to protect lives and property.
The warning by the new Eastern Regional Police Commander follows recent incidents of attacks on security facilities in parts of the country.
DCOP Owusu-Bempah gave the caution when the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman and Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, commissioned a newly completed police station at Asikuma.
For several decades, residents of Asikuma have struggled to access swift police intervention, relying on the nearest station at Anum — located several miles away. Construction of the Asikuma Police Station, which began in 2015 by Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, was abandoned after the change of government in 2016, leaving the community underserved.
To make the facility immediately operational, the MP has rented a two-year accommodation space for officers posted to the station.
The Deputy Minister noted that the government has earmarked Asikuma as an economic enclave along the Eastern Corridor Road, making it a priority area for major infrastructural and economic interventions.
He emphasized that establishing the police station is crucial to creating the secure environment needed to attract investment.
The District Chief Executive for Asuogyaman, Godwin Bobobee, outlined several ongoing initiatives in the area, including a 24-hour market complex integrated with a Women’s Development Bank, to be situated in Asikuma.
Meanwhile, a 12-seater water closet public toilet facility—the first of its kind in the community—has also been commissioned. The project was jointly funded by the MP and Sanitopia Community Interest Company, which has plans to construct 2,000 toilet facilities across Ghana for schools and communities.
