The impending by-election in Assin North Constituency in the Central Region is expected to be fiercely contested with multiple political parties to be vying for the seat but the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress have the chance to win.
Parliamentary election results since 1996 shows that the NDC won the seat in 1996, 2012 and 2020 while the NPP also won the seat in the year 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2016 respectively.
In the 2020 Parliamentary Election, the NDC won the seat with 17,498 votes while the NPP also polled 14,193 votes but the NPP won the Presidential Election in the Constituency with 16,067,compare to the NDC’s 15,014 votes.
Parliament has written to the Electoral Commission (EC) declaring the Assin North seat vacant on Monday, May 29.
Per the sources, the letter was based on the recent ruling and orders of the Supreme Court.
The apex court ordered Parliament to expunge James Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records after it concluded that he failed to renounce his Canadian citizenship at the time of filing his nomination forms to contest the polls.
Presiding Judge Justice Jones Dotse on Wednesday, May 17, ruled that the Electoral Commission (EC) acted unconstitutionally in allowing him to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections without proof of him renouncing his Canadian citizenship.
This is in the case filed by a resident of the constituency, Michael Ankomah Nimfah.
In 2016 Parliamentary Election, Abena Durowaa Mensah won the seat for the NPP with 15,553 votes while the NDC candidate, Ambre Samuel also polled 10,751 votes and Isaac Manu had 979 votes for PPP and Saani Mahama polled 115 votes for CPP.
The 2012 Seat was won by Ambre Samuel,NDC’s candidate with 14,338 votes, and NPP’s candidate Ebenezer Appiah-Kubi Polled 12,28. Other candidates were Akakpo John Gameley for PPP- 884 votes, Sanni Mahama for CPP- 131 votes and NDP’s candidate, Daniel Gibson Gyetuan had 129.
Untill the division of the Constituency into two(Assin North and Assin Central), Honourable Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, won the seat for the NPP in the year 2000,2004 and 2008 Respectively.
Honourable Kennedy Ohene Agyepong polled 20,066 votes in the year 2000 and increased the votes to 27,255 in 2004 but decreased votes to 24,181 in 2008.
In 2008, ALEX D. ANTWI BOASIAKO, NDC candidate polled 18,834 votes, ROLAND TAKYI- CPP candidate had 577 votes and JOHN DACOSTA BOTCHEY for
DFP had 336.
Madam Florence Kumi polled 14,071 votes for NDC in the year 2000 while PERCY KWASI ABOAGYE MENSAH also had 16,966 votes for the NDC in the year 2004.
Florence Kumi for the first time in 1996 won the seat for the NDC with 24,080 votes while her contenders, Kwabena Karikari- Apau,NPP Candidate Polled 13,242 votes but unfortunately for the CPP candidate,Joseph Yeboah got no vote.
