The Asuogyaman District in Ghana has recorded another tragic drowning incident, as the decomposing body of an adult male, believed to be in his 40s, was discovered floating on the Volta River near the Volta Rail Bridge at Senchi on November 21, 2024.
This brings to at least three such discoveries in the district this year, raising concerns over safety around the Akosombo stretch of the river.
The latest incident prompted a swift response from multiple institutions, including the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Adomi Senchi Police, the District Environmental Health Department, Ghana Health Services, and the Volta River Authority (VRA) Hospital.
Key officials present included Dr. Lawrencia Kekesi of VRA Hospital, Detective Inspector Antoinette Tetteh Asamoah of Adomi Senchi Police, Mr. Delordson Asafo, District Environmental Health Officer, Ms. Felina Pecku from Ghana Health Services, and Mr. David Sosu of NADMO.
Given the advanced state of decomposition, authorities conducted an immediate burial on November 22, 2024, at the Atimpoku Public Cemetery.
The cause of death remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident.
The Akosombo stretch of the Volta River, a hub for recreational and fishing activities, has witnessed similar occurrences in recent years. Authorities continue to urge caution and vigilance among visitors and hotel operators to ensure safety near the river.
