The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asuogyaman in Eastern Region , Thomas Ampem Nyarko, launched his campaign on Saturday September 21,2024 ahead of the December 7,presidential and parliamentary elections, promising to make history with his re-election by bringing further development to the constituency.
The campaign launch was preceded by a 24-hour “Economy Walk” from Atimpoku to South Senchi, where the event took place.
Thousands of supporters, alongside several Members of Parliament, national and regional executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), showed up in support of the MP.
Seeking a third term in office, Nyarko accounted for his stewardship, listing numerous projects and interventions in the areas of education, health, water and sanitation, women’s empowerment, and vocational skills development.
He emphasized that, despite his two terms being served while the NDC was in opposition, he has used his 5% share of the MP’s Common Fund to improve living standards in Asuogyaman.
Thomas Ampem Nyarko expressed disappointment that the Asuogyaman District Assembly, which receives 95% of the District Assembly Common Fund, has done little in terms of development.
He remains optimistic that more development will come to the constituency if John Mahama is re-elected president in 2024, while he continues as MP.
The MP assured constituents that issues such as bad road networks, inadequate classrooms, health facilities, toilet facilities, and job opportunities would be addressed under a Mahama-led administration.
During the launch, several speakers made up of some members of the minority caucus in Parliament, noth national and regional executives addressed party supporters.
Mr. William Atamudzi, Deputy Director of Welfare for the NDC, cautioned voters against supporting Pius Hadzide, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, citing his alleged involvement in corruption.
Atamudzi warned that residents would regret voting for Hadzide in the upcoming elections.
Malik Basintale, Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC, echoed similar sentiments, claiming Hadzide is a “candidate for jail.”
He accused Hadzide of duping constituents in Ketu South during the Australian visa scandal when he was Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, claiming, “he charged people GH¢105,000 each, and when they got to Australia, they were deported.”
Basintale criticized Hadzide’s lack of development in Asuogyaman despite his position as CEO of the National Youth Authority, stating, “He hasn’t built your roads, provided jobs, or given you water.
He doesn’t deserve your support.” Basintale vowed that Hadzide would face legal consequences if the NDC wins power, stating, “If we don’t jail Pius, change my name from Malik Basintale.”
He urged voters to choose Thomas Ampem Nyarko and John Mahama for development, praising the MP’s track record of bringing numerous projects to the constituency compared to Hadzide’s alleged inaction.
