The Sompahene of Akwamu Mangoase, Nana Bismark Asante, has reminisced the impact the Akosombo Dam spillage had on residents as today marks a year on after the disaster.
Nana Asante made this assertion during an interview on Bryt Fm’s Adekye Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney on Monday,October 14, 2024.
According to him, the dam spillage destroyed many houses and properties, making the lives of victims so hard.
“The spillage caused a lot of harm to us. Many of us lost some properties and valuables which we are yet to recover from. It’s sad and difficult but we believe everything happens for a reason”.
“The spillage has also devastated the livelihoods of the women and fishermen who operate above the river, which has caused them a great deal of difficulties. Providing for their families is what they do for a living, they are unable to do it now that the dam has overflowed” Nana Asante stated.
Touching on how life has been for residents in the area, he affirmed tha life has been difficult for victims, leading to unemployment, particularly for women and fishermen. Even those who harvest fish were impacted, meaning that all of their investments were lost.
Nana Asante again revealed drivers used that as an avenue to increase their fares since people used to cross the river by boat to other communities were unable to do so again.
” Drivers automatically increased their fares because they realized they could make more money from the disaster which again caused a lot of hardship on the residents in the area* he said.
