Tension is escalating in Akyem Ankaase, a farming community in the Atiwa East Municipality, Eastern Region, due to alleged illegal mining activities on residents’ farmlands.
According to Daniel Ansah, Chairman of the Ankaase-Gyadem Land Committee, also known as Chairman Abeiku, the incidents have involved brutal treatment, physical assault, and intimidation of victims, with farm produce and property destroyed without compensation.
The disputed land seizure has raised concerns among locals about their livelihoods and safety, highlighting the need for government and security agencies to address the growing issue of illegal mining in Ghana, which poses environmental, social, and human rights challenges.
Chairman Abeiku further claims the new Dce in the person of Hon.Ernest Ntim is behind all the illegal mining in the district claiming to have a government in power and that No one can’t stop him
Meanwhile, the affected farmers are urging authorities to intervene and halt the illegal mining activities, seeking compensation for destroyed properties and protection for their farmlands.
