Samuel Atta Akyea, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South, has come under fire from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allegedly calling its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, a drunk.
The NDC claims that on August 27, 2024, Atta Akyea made remarks at a mini-rally that attempted to portray Mr. Mahama as an alcoholic and inebriated.
The general secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, denounced Atta Akyea for going down to the gutter and called his remarks “reckless and unfounded” in a statement dated Thursday, August 29.
Notwithstanding the NDC’s praise for Mahama’s extraordinary qualities and description of him as a distinguished statesman with a sterling record, the party claimed that remarks of this nature not only compromise political discourse but also reveal the desperation of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the face of an impending electoral defeat.
“It is deeply regrettable that instead of focusing on issues that matter to the Ghanaian people, the NPP has resorted to personal attacks and character assassination. For the record, H.E. John Dramani Mahama is not a drunkard. He is a distinguished statesman whose commitment to the well-being and progress of Ghana is unquestionable. His track record in public service and his enduring leadership qualities speak for themselves.”
Thus, the party is requesting that the MP for Abuakwa South withdraw and apologize right away. The NDC issued a warning, stating that it will take all necessary steps to protect the honor and reputation of its flagbearer.
“We demand an immediate retraction and apology from Hon Atta Akyea for his unprovoked attack on the person of H.E. John Dramani Mahama. Failure to do so will leave the NDC with no choice but to explore all available avenues to defend the integrity and reputation of our Flagbearer.
“The NDC wishes to assure the good people of Ghana that we remain committed to a campaign of ideas and solutions. We call on the leadership of the NPP to rein in their members and focus on a clean and respectful campaign that addresses the concerns of the Ghanaian electorate,” the statement added.
