The public and institutions are urged to take note and make appropriate plans as the Ministry of the Interior has emphasized that Monday, August 4, 2025, will be a regular working day.
Given recent legislative amendments pertaining to Ghana’s national commemoration calendar, this clarification is necessary. Parliament approved a measure in June 2025 to reinstate Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday, September 21, as Founders’ Day, a statutory public holiday honoring Ghana’s fight for independence.
In the past, August 4 was celebrated as Founder’s Day to commemorate the United Gold Coast Convention’s (UGCC) establishment, a pivotal point in the country’s path toward independence. However, August 4 now qualifies as a commemorative day under the amended law.
The Ministry stressed in a July 31 statement that memorial days are not public holidays and do not, therefore, call for a vacation from work or public engagement.
The declaration affirms that August 4, 2025, would not be honored as a legislative holiday, putting an end to speculation.
