Speaking on Bryt Adekye Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney on January 10, 2025, governance expert Dr. Austin Akufo Gamey provided insights into President John Mahama’s approach to appointments. Dr. Gamey emphasized that nominations should not be misconstrued as appointments, stressing the President’s deliberate and cautious process.
“President Mahama is not obliged to make wholesale appointments,” Dr. Gamey noted, adding that thorough background checks are critical to ensure appointees are trustworthy and competent. He explained, “The President needs assurance that the CVs of nominees have substantial content and that those selected are capable of serving diligently in public office.”
Dr. Gamey further highlighted the importance of patience, asserting that investigations must precede appointments to prevent individuals with questionable motives from looting state resources. While lobbying for positions is common, he stated, “If you don’t get the position, it simply means you weren’t considered.”
Discussing the qualifications for public office, Dr. Gamey underscored the need for skills, wisdom, and the ability to adapt to modern challenges. “The environment in which we work today is vastly different from the past,” he said, emphasizing that technological advancements play a crucial role in governance. He urged caution in appointing individuals based on their past achievements alone, stressing the need for tolerance and wisdom in decision-making.
Dr. Gamey also praised key nominees, including Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson for the Finance Ministry, describing him as “an all-round finance expert with deep knowledge of taxation and ministry operations.” Similarly, he commended John Jinapor’s readiness for the Energy Ministry, citing his expertise in the sector, and Dr. Dominic Ayine’s strong legal background for his assigned portfolio.
Condemning unruly behavior among party supporters, Dr. Gamey labeled actions such as ransacking offices as “childish and unacceptable”.
Dr. Gamey concluded by lauding President Mahama’s careful selection of capable individuals, emphasizing the need for maturity and a focus on national development over partisan interests.
