Ghanaians have been urged not to politicise the flood crisis in the North, South and Central Tongu constituencies of the Volta Region by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He said it was only that way that everyone would be concerned about the catastrophic consequences of the Akosombo dam spillage.
This was expressed by President Akufo-Addo during his visit to Mepe and it’s surrounding communities on Monday to assess the extent of the spill’s destruction on residents.
“Let everybody know that politics does not come into the issue when things like this occur and government acts. When I took the oath of office, I took it on behalf of everyone in Ghana. And whether they voted for me or not, I’m the president of the people,” he said.
He said that the spill of extra water from the Kpong and Akosombo Dams will result in flooding in some areas of the Eastern, Greater Accra, and Volta regions, and that the government would do all in its power to guarantee that those in need of assistance would be attended to.
President Akufo-Addo added that the inter-ministerial committee appointed to handle flooding-related matters would decide on the immediate help to be given to the victims as well as how to guarantee that a calamity of this magnitude did not occur again in the future.
