Speech and language therapist at the Eastern Regional Hospital, Sandra Quayson has urged Ghanaians to reduce the intake of caffeinated drinks.
According to her, caffeinated drinks cause voice disorders as it takes enough time to process themselves in the human body system.
The Speech therapist added that caffeinated drink contains caffeine, a stimulant that is legal practically all over the world.
Speaking in an interview on ‘‘Menkwa show’’ with Okley Kofi Solomon on Koforidua-based Bryt FM, Madam Sandra Quayson disclosed that voice disorders are mainly caused by a variety of reasons and affect the ability to speak normally.
She added that the vocal folds are to separate structures which are located in the larynx or voice box and advised Ghanaians to take a vocal rest and increase their intake of water to help improve vocal folds.
Advising the general public to avoid self-medication as it dries the vocal folds, she again warned Ghanaians to reduce smoking and eating more spicy foods.
The speech therapist revealed vocal cords become inflamed, develop growths or become paralyzed, they can’t work properly, and you may develop a voice disorder.
She lectured “Humans have two vocal folds which open and close during normal breathing, and during sound production, or phonation, the vocal folds come together and vibrate”.
The public was, however, urged to take in vitamin A, E and C as it helps unique sound production.
