Fishermen in Axim, Nzema East District, Western Region, are pushing back against the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development’s closed season for fishing.
The Ministry has announced a closed season for inshore fishing fleets from July 1st to July 31st, and industrial trawlers until August 31st.
In an interview with the media, the fishermen expressed frustration, arguing that July is a prime fishing month for them. They claim that closing the sea during this period would severely impact their livelihood, as fishing is their primary source of income.
The fishermen’s resistance highlights the challenges of balancing fisheries conservation with the needs of local fishing communities.
While the closed season aims to conserve fish stocks, the fishermen’s concerns about their livelihoods underscore the need for dialogue and potential adjustments to the policy.
