In a significant step toward enhancing Ghana’s healthcare system for the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative was launched in September 2024 in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
The AYA team, led by Senior Project Manager Fionn Harnischfeger, paid a courtesy visit to the Hon. Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to provide updates on the initiative and further strengthen the collaboration between the Ministry and GIZ.
The AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative is a 39-month modular project, implemented by GIZ on behalf of three international pharmaceutical companies and one foundation, and builds on the successful completion of the Ghana Heart Initiative (GHI).
The project aims to improve the quality of healthcare services, expand access to screening, and ensure better control of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and Type II Diabetes amongst Ghanaians.
During the meeting, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its alignment with national health priorities and the government’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for all Ghanaians. He emphasized the critical importance of building the capacity of healthcare professionals, particularly at the grassroots level, to ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare services.
The Honorable Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to providing the necessary support for the successful implementation of the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative, recognizing it as a vital step in addressing the growing NCD burden in the country.
